New Microsoft Windows Phone Marketplace

Microsoft has reportedly announced the re-branding of the Windows Mobile marketplace to Windows Phone Marketplace, which is said to be a redesigned and updated version of the mobile application store. The change has been sparked by Microsoft as it strives to grab a larger slice of the smart phone marketplace.

The planned change to it’s online app marketplace has been designed to coincide with the companies migration from the Windows Mobile OS to the latest Windows Phone 7 mobile operating system.
To help make inroads into both the massively popular App store (with more than 3 Billion application downloads) and Google’s Android open source offering, Microsoft are offering a huge 70 percent sale commission to any successful mobile app developers, with Microsoft taking the remaining 30 percent. Developers will also get the same deal as at Apple App Store, in that they can set their own prices.

The Window Phone Marketplace is set to launch with around 1000 mobile applications initially, a far cry from Apple’s estimated 135,000, however microsoft have made some powerful applications alliances with companies such as Namco,  EA, ,Associated Press, Foursquare, Sling, Pandora, Netflix and Shazam.

Coca Cola 2010 Winter Olympic Games Mobile Application

Coca Cola are to release a free mobile application that is promising enhanced mobile media and digital experiences, that is aimed at “on the go” Winter Olympic sports fans. The campaign is also going to include a custom designed WAP site to support of the application which can be viewed at – http://m.cokeopengames.com

The director of media interactive communications at Coca-Cola, Linda Cronin, was recently quoted as saying “We’ve established a first-of-a-kind partnership with NBC on the development of a co-branded mobile application that brings fans into the Vancouver experience by playing energetic, familiar sounds related to the Games like air horns and cowbells and the sounds associated with drinking a Coke—ice clinking, pouring, the first ‘ahh’—right on their iPhone and iPod touch.”

Cronin continued “We had a lot of success with this channel during the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games,” adds Cronin, “so we significantly increased our mobile commitment for Vancouver in order to deliver the excitement of the Games to fans no matter where they are.”

Gartner Inc, the global researcher and technology advisor organization has recently published and selected the top 10 consumer mobile apps for 2012. The applications were selected on the impact they will have on consumers and leading players, taking into account revenue, customer loyalty, consumer value, the business model itself and the forecast penetration into the market.
The Research Director at Gartner, namely. Sandy Shen, was quoted as saying “Consumer mobile applications and services are no longer the prerogative of mobile carriers,” “The increasing consumer interest in smartphones, the participation of Internet players in the mobile space, and the emergence of application stores and cross-industry services are reducing the dominance of mobile carriers. Each player will influence how the application is delivered and experienced by consumers, who ultimately vote with their attention and spending power.”

Ms Shen continued “The ultimate competition between industry players is for control of the ‘ecosystem’ and user experience, and the owner of the ecosystem will benefit the most in terms of revenue and user loyalty,” shortly followed by. “We predict that most users will use no more than five mobile applications at a time and most future opportunities will come from niche market ‘killer applications’.”

Gartner Inc. listed the top 10 consumer mobile applications in 2012 to include:

(1) Mobile Money Transfer Apps
Mobile applications that will allow money to be transferred using SMS (Short Message Service). Costs, speed and convenience were highlighted as major benefits.
(2) Mobile Location based Services
Also know as LBS, a service that is going to integrate neatly into many social networking applications. A growth of 4 or 5 times in the use of Mobile LBS are predicted in the next few years.

(3) Mobile Search
Many of the big search engines are plowing hug resources into the development to make searching on mobile devices faster, more effective and easier to use and as more users receive internet on there phones this is naturally going to be a big growth area.

(4) Mobile Browsing Apps
Mobile web is set to be a key part of most corporate business-to-consumer (B2C) mobile strategies over the next few years.

(5) Mobile Health Monitoring Applications
At present, mobile health monitoring is at an early stage of development and implementation, however in the future, the industry will be able to monetize the service by offering mobile healthcare monitoring products, services and solutions to CDOs.

(6) Mobile Payment Applications
Mobile payments come in three guises.
(i) Making a payment when other alternatives are limited.
(ii) An extension to online payment services for easier access and convenience.
(iii) An additional factor for security as it can provide further authentication.
(7)  Near Field Communication Services
Near field communication (NFC) wireless data transfer (10 cm) between compatible devices for retail purchases, transport, personal ID and loyalty card systems.
(8)  Mobile Advertising Apps
The mobile advertising global spend is set to grown massively. Mobile advertising is an important way to monetize content on the mobile Internet, offering free applications and services to end users.

(9)  Mobile Instant Messaging
Mobile IM is an opportunity for both mobile advertisers and social networking sites, which have been built into some mobile IM clients.

(10) Mobile Music Applications
Consumers want music on their phones and they want to take it with them say Gartner, so as current music packages have been not much good, room for large growth exists.

The electronics giant, Samsung and Handmark, a world leading mobile applications developer and distributor have recently announced a joint Global Venture Fund to invest in either companies or individuals with leading innovative,  mobile game ideas for the next generation of Samsung mobile phones. It has been said that Companies and/or individuals that are selected will be eligible  to receive up to $250,000 each to fund the development of the winning mobile game ideas.

Chris Barnett, senior vice president of Global Sales and Strategic Partnerships for Handmark was quoted as saying “We know there’s a wealth of great ideas out there waiting to be discovered,” he continued “This is a fantastic opportunity for anyone, including big brands, mobile developers or any individual with a unique, creative idea to make it a reality.”

Wireless Expertise, the mobile market research and consulting company have recently released a forecast showing that the mobile appllications and gaming market could reach $16.6 Billion by the year 2013, or in other figures, a rise of around 12 Billion over the next 4 years. The rise has been predicted due to the huge increase in the sales of smartphones, which are expected to triple over the same period, with an estimated 1.6 Billion smartphone users globally.

The CEO of Wireless Expertise, Anuj Khanna was reported as commenting  “We expect smartphone growth to have a positive impact on the number of application downloads in the short- to mid-term,” in a prepared statement. “Strong revenues are expected to come from low-end mass market smartphones and mid-to high-end feature-phones in the mid- to long-term as operators and handset manufacturers take app stores to the mass market.”

The Microsoft Corporation have recently released an upgrade of its Windows Mobile operating system, with features that include enhanced touch screen and navigation tools.

Windows Mobile 6.5 should begin appearing in mobile phones by July 2009. An announcement was also made about plans to create an online application storefront which will be similar to Apple’s App Store and said that they are improving their mobile version of Internet Explorer.

Microsoft is hoping that Windows Mobile 6.5 will launch phones that use to the software into the same class as smartphone devices such as the iPhone, BlackBerry Storm and T-Mobile G1.

A new report from Infomra Telcoms & media says that mobile handset vendors are to put “openness” near the top of there development list to help increase revenues and reduce costs.

Last Thursday a statement released by Informa showed that mobile operating systems (OS) and application developments are already benefiting significantly from an open source input stream. The two most significant players that are using open source technology at the moment are Googles Android and Symbian OS and according to the analyst firm LiMo.

Gavin Byrne, a research analyst at Informa, was quoted as saying in the report: “The smartphone segment is no longer as simple as it was a few years ago. Since early 2007, Symbian, Microsoft, Linux and BlackBerry [platforms] have been joined by Apple’s OS X iPhone, Android, and recently Palm’s Web OS.”

Byrne also said “The decision to move Symbian to open source is crucial in maintaining its leadership over Android, Linux and Microsoft, in an increasingly competitive market”

Informa stated that in a recent report that 49% of the smartphones manufactured last were based on a Symbian OS, which was a drop from 65% in the previous year, with the drop in performance blamed on problems with Nokia’s smartphones which use the Symbian system combined the growing popularity of other competing platforms such as Microsoft Windows Mobile, OS X iPhone, BlackBerry OS, Android and Linux.
